A design can serve many different purposes. What form, tooling, and type of fidelity the designer chooses, depends on the goal of the concept. Sometimes a detailed look into the future is needed to show where the application is going. It must be emphasized that this always will be a high fidelity artist’s impression. It’s not the final look and feel of the product. The design has to undergo iterations and usability tests before the application, or maybe a minimal viable product (MVP) version of it, is ready for production.
In other cases, a low fidelity pencil sketch or wireframe is a better option, especially when speed is an import factor. Sometimes a particular user journey has to be mapped out to go along with an interaction flow of wireframes of a prototype.
